I was lamenting the fact that there’s no real way to stop the government from running the illegal wiretap program.. .because they’re the f’ing government, but then i realized that they don’t have the infrastructure to do that on their own.. they have to go through private companies who do… so this is a good way of letting at&t know that it’s not okay to collaborate illegally with our government… hopefully it will go somewhere, but in the least rattle their doors

so apparently the french parliament is saying that THE REPRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION OF COPYRIGHT WORKS ON ANY MEDIUM IS LEGAL AS LONG AS IT IS FOR PRIVATE USE

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON! I feel so bewildered… does no one else think this is just blatantly wrong? Sure people steal music from artists, and tons of people do… but they arn’t trying to say that they aren’t breaking the law.. they know full well they are _STEALING_ music… this is a government saying that it is OK.

Now it isn’t the individual that is the criminal, its the damn government…

this .. on top of crazy shit like legallized NSA wiretapping on us citizens, … plus all that Analog Hole bullshit legislation that will make it illegal to process a fucking analog signal ….

this is pretty awesome.. they use this polycarbonate snowdome type device mixed with a custom made projector/videocard tyep device which cuts 3d models into slices and projects them into various parts of the globe.. the result is a 3d image which can be viewed by walking around the globe…

i’d be very curious to understand the optics behind this technology

ok anyone who reads this, this seems really stupid to me… it would be very easy to circumvent an RFID embedded dvd… now when they pass dvd images around theyll just include the hex dump of the RFID chips data that they can sense through a reader… then just buy an RFID kit, dump the data onto the RFID, hold it near the player when it plays the dvd… then when it tries to authenticate with the remote server, some reverse engineers will jus study the authentication handshake, then emulate it with the device… assuming the data is in fact on the DVD (i see the possibility of a hardware dongle, btw since when did you ever hear of a standalone DVD player that had internet access, wtf)… and if it’s encrypted with a key that only gets transfered once a valid purchase has been ensured remotely, then that key can be extracted by home-brew DVD soft/hardware that cheats the protocol… So, in effect, either the decrypt keys will be passed along with ISOs and a simple unlock-type CSS-style system will be put in place, which we all know was highly successful for the dvd industry (hehe, css was broken 1 week after the standard was published) … I know this is just R&D, and it sure is a different look at the problem, but please… give pirates people some credit, they generally know what they are doing

this is amazing, researchers have discovered a way to operate a fuel cell that works using the glucose in blood cells with the of a non-toxic oxidizer (Vitamin K3, which is also found in the body). The implications for this are huge for nanotech (no pun intended )! This has possibilities on the order of self-powered implants, data-transmitters for exploring damaged organs, as well as (in the extreme case) a way to tie up loose ends in artificial organs (artificial hearts were cited!).

He’s written papers against the concept of a national id card as poor security before, and in this he presents the reasons against it..

U.S. House approves bill to end death tax

very nice, hopefully this will go through… a death tax is just like any other tax: a way for the government to distribute, or rather hide facts about its money management. Removing the death tax may lead to augmenting other taxes, but at least it will help consolidate that mess…

Ntera, Dublin based nanotech startup has developed a NanoChromics Display (NCD), which they squeezed into an ipod to demonstrate its awesomeness.

heh, well now that its hit the media people are heralding it as the demise of applied-DRM, too bad this method is nothing more than the equivalent of taking the audio output and playing it to a file. There’s no way to stop people from removing DRM, if they can play it on speakers then there’s no way to stop them from playing it to an output elsewhere.

Users of wine, the windows emulator for linux, found that the new Microsoft update portal, Microsoft Downloads, is actually designed to check for Wine and to bail if it detects it. The free software community is half incensed, half bummed about this… shrug,

I feel that Microsoft has no obligation as a private enterprise to cooperate with its competitors;
HOWEVER, I would look at this from a math standpoint, of course…

game theory would tend to suggest that its in microsoft’s best interests to cooperate, I wont show my nash equilibrium for this here, but the long and short of it is that by not alienating the linux community, users of the MS Office suite in wine will not be driven to using OpenOffice, thus, Microsoft makes more $$$, which would theoretically be good for them right?

Sure Linux users won’t be forced to switch to Windows, but the real Linux users that care enough to deal with configuring and resolving Wine’s many problems/incompatibilities are probably already hooked on linux, so why bother?

The national ID that is proposed in HR 418 will use RFID technology. Remember in Minority Report where the government could log where you were last scanned in by your retinae? It will be kind of like that except your ID card will give away your location at all times whenever a scanner is near. That’s basically the technology capabilities that we will be handing the government by agreeing to let this pass through our legislative branch. I just send a letter to Julia Carson and I suggest you do too. (or to your respective state representatives)

hrm, while i was gone on break, UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the US was being stingy with aid and should raise taxes in order to give more money to the U.N.

This is messed up.

Why raise taxes? If the moral thing to do is give aid, then why not just let all Americans donate their money rather than making it mandatory via taxes? “But not all americans would want to donate their money” Right. Whats the problem? OH! i see, you want Americans who don’t want to give their money to HAVE to give it, right?

So, why not just take it from them? It’s the same thing right?

How many genocides have gone unreported, uncrusaded… many on a much more massive scale than the holocaust? Too many people falsely claim to be objective in their humanitarianism… often just b/c thats the trendy thing to say..

Please note, I’m not trying to diminish the gravity of the tsunami, or any other disaster at all, i’m just trying to get some perspective. I am not against charity, please do not misinterpret me, in fact, I am very much for charity and international aid in this disaster. What I AM against, is mandatory charity. I do realize this is the worst natural disaster in recorded history, which is one reason I think its getting such a massive response; it was a natural disaster that killed indiscriminately, no single person who could polarize groups of people for or against the deaths, etc..
