RFID Journal - Group Studies RFID to Stop Digital Piracy

ok anyone who reads this, this seems really stupid to me… it would be very easy to circumvent an RFID embedded dvd… now when they pass dvd images around theyll just include the hex dump of the RFID chips data that they can sense through a reader… then just buy an RFID kit, dump the data onto the RFID, hold it near the player when it plays the dvd… then when it tries to authenticate with the remote server, some reverse engineers will jus study the authentication handshake, then emulate it with the device… assuming the data is in fact on the DVD (i see the possibility of a hardware dongle, btw since when did you ever hear of a standalone DVD player that had internet access, wtf)… and if it’s encrypted with a key that only gets transfered once a valid purchase has been ensured remotely, then that key can be extracted by home-brew DVD soft/hardware that cheats the protocol… So, in effect, either the decrypt keys will be passed along with ISOs and a simple unlock-type CSS-style system will be put in place, which we all know was highly successful for the dvd industry (hehe, css was broken 1 week after the standard was published) … I know this is just R&D, and it sure is a different look at the problem, but please… give pirates people some credit, they generally know what they are doing

heh, well now that its hit the media people are heralding it as the demise of applied-DRM, too bad this method is nothing more than the equivalent of taking the audio output and playing it to a file. There’s no way to stop people from removing DRM, if they can play it on speakers then there’s no way to stop them from playing it to an output elsewhere.

Microsoft designs upgrade incompatibility with Wine

Users of wine, the windows emulator for linux, found that the new Microsoft update portal, Microsoft Downloads, is actually designed to check for Wine and to bail if it detects it. The free software community is half incensed, half bummed about this… shrug,

I feel that Microsoft has no obligation as a private enterprise to cooperate with its competitors;
HOWEVER, I would look at this from a math standpoint, of course…

game theory would tend to suggest that its in microsoft’s best interests to cooperate, I wont show my nash equilibrium for this here, but the long and short of it is that by not alienating the linux community, users of the MS Office suite in wine will not be driven to using OpenOffice, thus, Microsoft makes more $$$, which would theoretically be good for them right?

Sure Linux users won’t be forced to switch to Windows, but the real Linux users that care enough to deal with configuring and resolving Wine’s many problems/incompatibilities are probably already hooked on linux, so why bother?

shrug, M$ confuses me sometimes

Oppose HR 418 - Real National ID Act

The national ID that is proposed in HR 418 will use RFID technology. Remember in Minority Report where the government could log where you were last scanned in by your retinae? It will be kind of like that except your ID card will give away your location at all times whenever a scanner is near. That’s basically the technology capabilities that we will be handing the government by agreeing to let this pass through our legislative branch. I just send a letter to Julia Carson and I suggest you do too. (or to your respective state representatives)

BEGINQUOTE
What’s wrong with H.R. 418 — a bill we are told will stem the flow of illegal aliens through our porous borders? For starters, it does NOTHING to stem the flow of illegal aliens. Instead, H.R. 418 will:

1. Establish a national ID card.

2. Establish a federally-coordinated database of personal information on American citizens with Canada and Mexico.

3. Use the new national ID to track American citizens when traveling outside the U.S. — and within the U.S.

4. Re-define “terrorism” in broad new terms that could include members of firearms rights and pro-life groups or other such groups as determined by whoever is in power at the time.

5.Authorize the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to unilaterally expand the information included in driver’s licenses, including such biometric information as retina scans and DNA information — and even radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking technology. Carry a driver’s license with RFID and governmental officials will know your whereabouts 24/7.
ENDQUOTE

please, i urge you to write a letter (you can even send an email, it takes no time at all) if you feel as much as I do that this is a potential major privacy violation.

a smart move, asshole

I know he says he was misinterpreted and he didn’t actually say these things, i don’t buy it. Too bad the UN posts videocasts of every press conference they have… here. He did say it, sure he was speaking ‘in general’ but come on, of all the GDPs of industrial countries the US pledges about .7%, which is the lowest of most of the countries he was talking about, I don’t buy that crap that he ‘wasn’t talking about any countries specifically’

some afterthoughts:
did we get aid from the UN for our (how many was it, 3? 4?) hurricanes in florida?
no…. but then again… we didn’t ‘need’ it.
I know its not like our GDP is lacking in the bulge or anything, but why does the US have to pay the highest membership fees and have the most expected of its role in international politics simply because it has been the de facto standard over the past years of mid/post cold-war intervention politics.

idea for more money: how about using some of the $21 billion you stole from iraqi children
(UN Oil for Food Program)

If Egeland really was misinterpreted, sucks for him, he should know better as an international figure to make general claims and cryptic chiding statements. I listened to him speak the words on videotape, I’m not getting this from some other source who rehashed his words, so I feel like my personal opinion about his ‘being misinterpreted’ is: BS.

U.N. official slams U.S. as ’stingy’ over aid

hrm, while i was gone on break, UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the US was being stingy with aid and should raise taxes in order to give more money to the U.N.

 This is messed up.

i’m not even going to get on how bad the U.N. is at handling money, (see also, UN Oil for Food program… *chokes*) (aside: heres an interesting plan)

The beggar unhappy with the alms … wtf
maybe some people are just upset that so much money is going directly from private hands to the relief efforts, rather than using the UN as a middleman… how convenient for millions to be passing through an agency with historically bad money management where cash tends to “slip through the cracks” into the pockets of the bureacrats who run it.

anyway… the nerve of comments like that just set me off

i hate to be really cold here, but just because another country suffered a massive disaster does not make you obligated to help it … if you were obligated it would not be charity, you would not be doing a good deed by helping… it wouldn’t be moral…. it would be statutory. Does anyone feel the same way I do in that he really doesn’t have the right to tell us how to manage our internal governmental practices, let alone to tell us that we _owe_ him more money?

Why raise taxes? If the moral thing to do is give aid, then why not just let all Americans donate their money rather than making it mandatory via taxes? “But not all americans would want to donate their money” Right. Whats the problem? OH! i see, you want Americans who don’t want to give their money to HAVE to give it, right?

So, why not just take it from them? It’s the same thing right?
Taking it without their permission… say, this sounds familiar…

“1. To take (the property of another) without right or permission.”

The definition of stealing from dictionary.com

Thank you, but WE will donate OUR money as we see fit, not to you… now if you would cordially feck off Mr. Undersecretary-General … don’t you have some funds to skim off somewhere anyway?

And we get chided for it as if we are the black sheep of the industrialized countries b/c we are #4 in aid on the list and not #1. (Why are we criticized for being evil imperialists when we are there, and criticized for being uncaring money-grubbing capitalists when we arnt?)

In response to Mr. Egeland’s comments, Mr. Duffy pointed out that the United States is “the largest contributor to international relief and aid efforts, not only through the go
vernment, but through charitable organizations. The American people are very giving.”

(I know you never know who to trust when it comes to these numbers, but statistically, if they arn’t judged per capita i think i may have a heart attack… whether or not it changes where the US stands or not.. I frankly do not care if the US gives the most amount of money or not.)

On another note, I love how people pick and choose which disasters they campaign for too… how many disasters have occured in history? How many genocides have gone unreported, uncrusaded… many on a much more massive scale than the holocaust? Too many people falsely claim to be objective in their humanitarianism… often just b/c thats the trendy thing to say..

Please note, I’m not trying to diminish the gravity of the tsunami, or any other disaster at all, i’m just trying to get some perspective. I am not against charity, please do not misinterpret me, in fact, I am very much for charity and international aid in this disaster. What I AM against, is mandatory charity. I do realize this is the worst natural disaster in recorded history, which is one reason I think its getting such a massive response; it was a natural disaster that killed indiscriminately, no single person who could polarize groups of people for or against the deaths, etc..

crap like this just sets me off

hmm, stress … check, fatigue … check, irritation to the eye … if you count that horrible hurting-eye thing you have when you don’t get much sleep … check, consuming excess amounts of caffeine … a definite check…

“If you hold the irrational as your standard of value and the impossible as your concept of the good, if you long for rewards you have not earned, for a fortune or a love you don’t deserve, for a loophole in the law of causality, for an A that becomes not-A at you whim, if you desire the opposite of existence - you will reach it.”

“Happiness is not to be achieved at the command of emotional whims. Happiness is not the satisfaction of whatever irrational wishs you might blindly attempt to indulge. Happiness is a state of non-contradictory joy - a joy without penalty or guilt, a joy that does not clash with any of your values and does not work for your own destruction, not the joy of escaping from your mind, but of using your mind’s fullest power, not the joy of faking reality, but of achieving values that are real, not the joy of a drunkard, but of a producer. Happiness is possible only to a rational man, the man who desires nothing but rational goals, seeks nothing but rational values and finds his joy in nothing but rational actions.”

“Just as I support my life, neither by robbery nor alms, but by my own effort, so I do not seek to derive my happiness from the injury or the favor of others, but earn it by my own achievement. Just as I do not consider the pleasure of others as the goal of my life, so I do not consider my pleasure as the goal of the lives of others. Just as there are no contradictions in my values and no conflicts of interest among my desires - so there are no victims and no conflicts of interest among rational men, men who do not desire the unearned and do not view one another with a cannibal’s lust, men who neither make sacrifices nor accept them.”
